Shiv Nadar, a billionaire industrialist, and philanthropist from India is the founder of Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) and currently serves as Chairman of the IT giant. Today HCL has a global presence in 42 countries in the form of offices, delivery centers, and innovation labs with an employee strength of more than 1,37,000 professionals serving in various positions. What began in a modest Delhi ‘barsati’ (small shed) today boasts of revenue worth $8.3 billion and more, with each passing year.

Under his watchful eye, HCL began producing first-generation microprocessors in the 1980s when his only worldwide contemporary in the industry was Steve Jobs. The company steadily grew its product range to include PCs, computer hardware, a UNIX-based operating system, and the first relational database management system. He founded India’s pioneer computer education institution, NIIT which succeeded in producing the first wave of proficient human resources for the country’s future IT industry.

Shiva Nadar was born on 14 July 1945 in Tiruchendur, Tamil Nadu, India to Shivasubramania and Bamsundari Devi. She did her schooling at Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam, and graduated from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Career

In 1967, he has started his profession at Walchand group’s College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), but he shortly surrendered it to start his own endeavor, in organizations with a few friends and partners.

Shiva founded HCL in 1986 in a garage to make calculators and microprocessors. Has steadily strengthened the core of his company and reformed an IT enterprise from an IT hardware corporation over the next three decades. Supporters to help Nadar include former HCL chairman Ajay Chowdhury, Arjun Malhotra (CEO and chairman, Headstrong), S. Raman, Subhash Aurora, DS Puri, Yogesh Vaidya, and Mahendra Pratap.
